Buddhism was founded by Siddhārtha Gautama also known as Gautama Buddha, the Historical Buddha or simply Buddha was born on the Nepal/India border and taught in Northern India between 560BCE - 480BCE. Modern historians are not in agreement over the precise dates of his birth although he is thought to have been 80 at the time of his death. The Buddha taught throughout the North of India and Southern Nepal during his life. The first Buddhist teachings in this era took place near the holy city of Varanasi (Benares) when the Buddha taught in the deer park of Sarnath.
