Two nations won WWII; US & USSR. The US even supplied the USSR with planes, guns, and ammunition.

The USSR had Germany under control, so much so, that Britain/US had to literally race for Berlin. Otherwise all of Germany would have been under Soviet control...instead of just East Germany. Japan was America's war, that's why America calls it, "the Pacific War", who would ultimately control the Pacific?...and it was an un-written code, that no one else would be permitted to play a major role in it. The USSR stayed out of it (until the bomb was dropped) and Britain/Australia were given secondary roles in the Pacific; which Britain (primarily) resents to this day. But there was more to it than just Pearl Harbor; the Royal Navy was termed "short legged" by the USN. The USN could re-fuel at sea, the RN couldn't, they had to use bases (one of the original reasons for Britain's Empire building and colonization to begin with...military bases for re-supply).

But during those colonization decades; no one could've foreseen "airplanes, aircraft carriers, and re-fuelling at sea." World War II in the Pacific was such a war (a long range war); and only the US had that capability (and the enemy of course); but not so Britain, they were "short legged" and thus were relegated a secondary role.
