The main idea of the declaration of independence was the sovereignty of the colonies from the rule of great brittain. The colonists were mainly upset about their lack of representation in Parliamentary matters. Given that they still had to pay taxes to the Brittish empire, there was a prominent saying of the time that was sparked from this contempt: "No taxation without representation."
One of the main problems between the 13 American colonies with England was the lack of Parliamentary representation which allowed England to impose taxes on the colonies. This grievance led to much despair and in some quarters anger with the English - Colony relationship. The political slogan in the colonies at the the time became " No taxation without representation".
Modern revisionists get it wrong every time (and on purpose). The slavery issue actually had very little to do with the War Between the States. The main reasons were the same as with the Revolutionary War : State's Rights and taxation without representation.

The American colonists objected to British taxes because they were being forced to pay money to the Crown, and at the same time had no say in the British Parliament. This is where the phrase "no taxation without representation" comes from.
At this point int time, the colonists and Britain had a vastly different social structure, not to mention other things. Parliament simply did not share the colonists' interests. The colonists wanted to be represented by those who shared their interests, but when Parliament refused (arguing in favor of "virtual representation"), the Revolution ensued.
