The timing marks are on the crank pulley and oil pan. You have to line them up and also line your cams up.
1998 and newer have no timing marks. Timing cannot be adjusted.
ON MY 2.2 4CYLINDER ( 1999 ) YOU HAVE TO PULL THE TIMING CHAIN COVER TO SEE THE " TIMING MARKS " . ON THE CRANK SPROCKET IT IS A PUNCH MARK.....ON THE CAM SPROCKET IT IS A SMALL HOLE IN THE SPROCKET . BOTH MUST LINE UP WITH TABS ON THE CHAIN TENSIONER. THE REST OF THE TIMING IS DONE BY CRANK & CAM SENSORS AND THE COMPUTER.
The 1999 Toyota Tercel timing marks can be found on the main pulley. The timing marks will be scattered around the outside of the main pulley.

What exactly are you trying to do? Timing is controlled by the computer. Timing marks are on the timing chain gears. I own a 1998 Malibu JJ
On front or facing surface of cams. There are two marks or grooves on each. If lined up properly (with crank pulley notch at TDC) they would be at a 3 and 9 o'clock position.
