the line mark on the harmonic balancer is used in alignment with the original timing case cover on the face of the motor behind the water pump, On the case you will see a gauge, On the gauge you will see degree marks 4,6,8 12 , . You will align the mark with 0 degrees usally to get TDC, ( Top Dead Center ) and that is how that works hope it helped
one is on the cam gear and the other is on the crank timing belt gear. spark timing is on the crank to the rear of the engine
It is either out of time, the plug wires are not connected correctly, or the distributor is off 180 degrees.
some one put the wrong balancer on the crank. or put it on inside out...
A 1979 Chevrolet pickup does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain. The chain will last the life of the engine and is normally replaced during an engine overhaul.
There are no timing settings to set in a 1979 Grand Prix. The 3.4 L and the 3.1L and the 3.8 L that Pontiac used in its lineups all had computer controlled timing.
Fist of all I would like to state: BE CAREFUL WHEN WORKING ON A RUNNING ENGINE! HOT OR MOVING PARTS SUCH AS THE FAN, BELTS, ETC CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY, BURNS OR DEATH! Find the tdc (top dead center) line on the harmonic balancer or "crank hub". Mark it with white paint or chalk (this will make it easier to see). Find out the inital timing required for your engine. Mark the timing tab (pass side front of the engine near crank hub) at the specified number(for example 6 deg before tdc) with white paint or chalk. Loosen distributor hold down bolt. Disconnect and plug vaccum line to the distributor. Hook up timing light to #1 or #6 spark plug wire (It does not matter which, AS LONG AS IT IS #1 or #6 NOT ANY OTHER PLUG WIRE) run engine at idle point timing light at timing marks. Turn distributor until white marks line up. Remember to reconnect the vaccum line and retitghten distributor hold down after setting the inital timing.

The is to Bring the engine to TDC ( Top Dead Center ) you can do this by removing the drivers side valve cover and watching the intake valve.. crank over the engine until that rocker arm opens then closes... also there is a timing hash and timing mark on the timing cover, and harmonic balancer. once this is done set the rotor on the distribur so that once it is in the motor it points the Cylinder #1... then install dist cap, then adjust timing using a timing light.... Hope this helped...
Unless someone installed a long shaft kit on it at some point, it should be 15 inches.
The Facts of Life - 1979 Ex Marks the Spot 8-20 was released on: USA: 7 March 1987
www.motorcraft.com shows the ignition timing for a 1979 F150 with the 460 cubic inch ( 7.5 liter ) V8 , automatic transmission , as 14 degrees BTDC
6 degrees BTDC.
