Best Answer

Files that are stored on a disk must be split in 'fragments' sometimes in order to make them fit into the disk. This is called a fragmented file.

But if a file has many fragments like 100-200, it can take like 3 times more time to load it. Especially files that are loaded when you start your pc, which causes it to start up VERY SLOW.

To defragment a disk means that you re-wright fragmented files into less, usually 1, fragments.

WARNING: SSDs(solid state drives) won't work faster if you deframent them.

It is always recommended to do a disk defragment before a scandiskchkdsk?

No. Chkdsk may find disk errors relating to bad sectors. You want to correct these errors, locking out the bad sectors, before you defragment the disk. This is because a defrag will rearrange vast amounts of information that is on the disk, and you don't want portions of previously-readable files moved to bad sectors and be thus made unreadable.
