Carnations are a flowering, herbaceous plant, in the Kingdom Plantae, belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. The natural color of a carnation is a purple-pink color. Other colors were created by selective breeding, but the blue-mauve carnation was created by genetic engineering. Carnations are among the top ten flowers cut worldwide.

Chrysanthemums belong to the phylum, Magnoliophyta (the flowering plants).

Some systems use the term, Division, instead of phylum.

DNA testing is forcing rapid change in the Science of Taxonomy. These changes are making it necessary to invent new systems for classification. It will be some time before these systems are distilled down to one reliable system. Meanwhile, some flexibility in thinking will be required.
