A good question for many oil change do-it-yourselfers as the plastic engine oil filter housing holds so fast after successive heating and cooling cycles it seems cemented in place. The problem most oil filter removal tools have with this particular filter housing (including wide strap wrenches) is spreading their grip evenly enough around the housing to prevent flexing the housing's side walls and damaging it. A bit of tourque is needed! After my first two failed tries at changing my wifes's S80 engine oil filter, a fellow on the other side of the Volvo parts counter proclaimed, "`The Lord says,` There is no S80 oil filter tool." Back to the house, back to lifting and bracing up the car again, back to removing the large under carraige shield again and back to another unsuccessful attemt at unscrewing the oil filter housing. Back to the Volvo dealer. In the middle of explaining my dilemma to the service manager he said, "Well, we have a tool for that." (!!*@#%@*!!! = my immediate internal comments) It seems that, to solve the Volvo oil filter problem, one must authoritatively state, on his side of the Volvo parts counter, "`The Volvo Service Manager says,` There is an S80 oil filter housing removal tool."
There's a plastic guard on the underside of the car that must be removed so that you can get to the oil filter and drain plug. The filter itself is a canister filter, so you replace the paper filter and the rubber gasket, but reuse the plastic housing.
No difference....

I own a 2001 Volvo v40 and the interior cabin filter is on the passenger side under the dash. Where the passengers feet would be. There was one cover I had to unscrew & remove and then the filter was exposed. Good Luck!
Under the car in the left rear. Be careful changing it as it has a plastic bracket.
metal latches on the housing. just open them up.
