It's a messy job. If it's in your budget, have a shop do it.
My Haynes manual wants you to change the filter and fluid every 30,000 miles.
Change the fluid only, every 50,000 miles or three years, whichever comes first.
This is worth doing on a regular basis. If you decide to do the job yourself,
pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car an follow the procedure.
