On late model cars the trans has a brain box, it monitors a number of things and it now determines when the trans needs to shift to another gear. The brain box also looks at live readings from the trans and compares them to a group of set parameters, when the perimeters are out of spec. the check trans light comes on. Another thing to think about is that the engine brain box and the trans brain box talk to each other and compare notes
