Try using a standard Allen wrench/hex key. Look for the correct size in the center of the unit, underneath the sink. Insert key, pull or push until the unit moves freely. Usually happens in our house when a bottle cap or can tab gets wedged between the walls and the moving parts. Good luck. Big Bob Baker - Fallston, Maryland.
Big Bob Baker is exactly correct. We had a party on Christmas and our disposal stopped working very similar to your problem. Had a pop tab stuck and this worked perfectly!!
