5w30. It is recommended for each year i know of in the montero engine. My strong advice is use synthetic or synthetic blend oil everytime, change it every 3,000 miles, and check it every 1,000 miles. these engines do burn oil at a faster rate than other cars, on average they burn about 1 qt per 1000 miles, so check frequently. I ran synthetic blend in my 01 montero, it burned at that rate for about a year, then slowed down, now 2 years later it does not burn a drop and i drive the same as i did 2 years ago. it might seem odd but you can't argue with results. hope this advice helps. And do not use the cheap oil either, such as recycled, it is the worst thing you could do to your engine. use name brand such as valvoline, mobil 1, or castrol.
