The USS Monitor was the first Union submarine (it was, in reality, only semi-submersible).
The USS Merrimac(k) was salvaged by the Confederate Navy and plated with iron (iron clad) and commissioned as the CSS Virginia.
The Monitor and the Virginia went at it in the Battle of Hampton Roads. This went down in history as the first battle between two ironclads.

Land mines, fixed ammunition, repeating rifles, boots designed to fit a certain foot, the morse telegraph, iron clad ships, steam powered warships, and submarines to name a few
It was blockaded by Union ships and cut off from supplies.
Off the top of my head I can think of the land mine, the machine gun, the repeating rifle, the practical iron clad warship and the gun turret. They were all used to kill people. Michael Montagne - also there was the hot air balloons for reconnaissance missions

Monitor and Merrimack (vessel ships). Only fought once. Made of iron at the front. Ironclad ships were a new invention. These ships were covered with iron plates that would deflect shells. Tin-clad ships were river boats that were lightly protected by iron. "Blockade Runners" were a name applied to a varitey of fast ocean ships that were used to get through the Union blockade.

Cannons, updated and more modern guns. The use of floating mines and iron clad ships also changed warfare at sea. Improvements in transportation with trains and steam ships made troops more mobile.
Mostly wind propelled wooden ships. At the time of the civil war however, the navy began converting the old wood and sail ships to iron steamships. For much of the war, there was an equal mix of both.
