There are 4 steps in compilation.
1>preprossing
2>compilation
3>assembly
4>linking
In linking stage ,it resolves references to external symbols, assigns final addresses to procedures/functions and variables. This address is not the physical address. Its called virtual address.

The size the virtual memory is determined by the size of the page file which saved in your hard disk. Virtual memory only uses the hard disk.
It is hardware. However, it is possible to create in software a "virtual" hard disk and this would be software.
Virtual Hard Disk (VHD)Those type of file are using mostly for computer emulatorsThey are the same as ZIP,RAR,ZIPX...Strong coded that only can be read from programs like Virtual PC,and of coure strong compressed.
since Virtual Memory utilizes Hard Disk space it is really only limited by how much free space you have on your hard drive
Virtual Memory
hard drive RAM ROM CD drive Floppy disk
I think virtual memory is a place on the hard drive used for memory other than the ram so virtual memory is it.
The computer's hard disk stores data - be that the operating system, application programs, documents or virtual memory.Stores data that needs to be kept between times when the computer is turned off.
Your Hard Disk is where programs and data are stored for later retrieval ( excluding virtual memory) . If a program is in execution it has to be loaded in the memory (by memory I mean the RAM), So your Java Heap has to be in the RAM and cannot reside on the Hard disk.
Physical memory is the RAM which you have placed on your motherboard, so if u have 4 slots which support 4 GB max it will equal 16 GB.Virtual memory is the amount of virtual memory allocated by the user & resides on the Hard Disk (Pagefile.sys). There is no limit to the amount of virtual memory which a user can set on a PC. It all depends on the size of the hard disk.

VMware is a type of virtual disk management system that stores it's operating system and everything into a hard disk. It is a way to make your files more portable.
