Furthermore, volleyball is one of the less expensive sports played today. This sport usually requires a minimum investment. For example, a child or young adult involved in this sport will usually need volleyball shoes, a uniform, and a volleyball. The equipment is minimal. A good net and great ball are the only main pieces of equipment needed to play a successful game. Volleyball shoes are very important because they provide shock absorption and support for the feet of the athlete.

The sport of volleyball started in 1895 when William Morgan, a physical education teacher for the YMCA, created the game of Mintonette. This pastime was meant to be a game that was played inside and with different numbers of people. The game was a mix of tennis and handball. Players had to be able to run and jump. Volleyball shoes were especially designed to help the performance of the player.

Volleyball was created just four years after another indoor sport called Basketball. Basketball was started in a town in Springfield, Ma. Basketball was considered a more rigorous sport intended for younger people; however, volleyball was a sport that was a little less demanding. The official volleyball was made by Spalding. The exact date is not known, and some propose that it was in 1900. Others propose that it was in 1896.

Since its early beginnings, volleyball has become an American pastime that is both recreational and professional. Players can play inside, or they can choose to play outside. Beach volleyball requires no volleyball shoes. Players can simply play in their stocking bare feet.

After America embraced volleyball, Canada was the next country to come onboard. This happened around 1900. History records show that volleyball was played as an American demonstration game. It was not until 1964 when the game was officially included in the Olympic games.
