Huh? There were both. The letters were a means to identify the class of car - I'm assuming that you meant to ask what is the difference between DL and GL. DL = DeLux and GL = GrandLux. It basically identified the different specifications for the car (GrandLux came with more extras)
According to my Chilton's Volvo repair book : The ( 1980 to 1983 ) DL , GL , Diesel takes : With engine oil filter change : ( 7.4 U.S. quarts ) * my book only covers up to the 1983 models *

My 1982 244 GL tank was 60 liters / 13.2 imperial gallons / roughly 16 U.S. gallons
Sometime in the 1980's Volvo dropped the old numbering sequence of 242, 244, 245 to delineate their 200 series cars and went to calling them all 240's. The DL and GL are trim and equipment levels with the DL being the lower or less expensive. The old numbers meant first, the series number. Second is the number of engine cylinders and the third was the number of doors the car had. A 245 is a 200series car, with a 4 cylinder engine and 5 doors is a station wagon.
If it has a 4 cylinder engine it is a 240 series : The 242 ( DL / GL / GT trim levels ) is a 4 cylinder engine , 2 door The 244 ( DL / GL trim levels ) is a 4 cylinder engine , 4 door The 245 ( DL etc. ) is a 4 cylinder , 5 door - station wagon

De Luxe
No
The DL and GL are just the trim and equipment level. The GL being the more upscale. You will notice some 240's have a clock while others have a tachometer and still others have a tachometer in the main instrument cluster and a small clock and sometimes even an oil pressure guage in the little side area to the right of the instrument panel. Some 240's have heated seats. Also not all 240's have electric windows. Many are just good ole roll up. Not sure which is more spiffy but these little differences are the what it is all about.
Yes, there is an engine wiring schematic for a 1981 Volvo 242 DL. You can find this schematic online at places like Volvo Tips and E Euro Parts.
In the 1989 Volvo 740 GL with a Bosch system it is located just above the steering column on the dash.
