When I fill up my gas tank I try to remember to pop the hood and check the oil. Not only is this a good habit to get into but you can smell the oil and rub some between your fingers to get a better idea of how well its holding up. If it smells like gas and is gritty between your fingers its time to change it.

Keeping up with the oil changes actually saves you money. You will burn less gas as the rings will be sealing better with fresh oil giving you more power and less blow by. Less heat build up in the motor due to better lubrication = less fuel usage and less wear on the rotating assembly. If you run your car low on oil the first thing to go is the rings then you start blowing oil out the tailpipe and you can see the blue smoke, thats when it get really expensive because now you're buying a few quarts of oil a week just to watch it go out the tailpipe. To have a mechanic pull your engine apart and put in new rings will cost around $700-1000 dollars.
