Cattle ranching became profitable because ranchers bought land cheap and when they did they bought a lot of it. They could have thousands of head of cattle and could ship them East by the railroad. People in the East needed and wanted good quality fresh beef and would pay good money for it. Ranchers could have several thousand head of cattle because they had enough land to keep them and they could hire men easily and pay them only a small fraction of the profits from selling the cattle, which left most of the money to the rancher.

Depends on the year like if it was dry it might not be good. But if there was no sickness or and the grass was good it might be a good income. Tennessee has the most cattle farms of any state, but is about ninth in cattle numbers. The average net income of a cattle farm in Tennessee is negative. There are a lot of part-time cow-calf operations in Tennessee.

For most conventional cattle farmers, hell no. You get high costs in terms of fertilizer, feed and fuel, not to mention labour costs, vet bills, and costs repairing fences and machinery. Your return investment is barely able to even positive, or even considered income, as most of the time you're in the red trying to pay off bills and such. However, the tide is turning with more and more farmers looking to raise cattle as a low-cost operation. They are using pasture and grass as a main feed source for their cattle, and aim to graze their cattle for 365 days of the year. Mob grazing is an alternative to continuous grazing to better use the pasture and gain productivity and boost forage density and rigour. These same people are looking for cows that are smaller, with good milking ability and great calving ease, are good mothers, and thrive on pasture and hay alone. Miniature cattle are getting a leg-up because of this demand for smaller cattle. With the use of more pasture and less on the drylot, machinery costs, fertilizer costs, feed costs, fuel costs, vet costs, labour costs, and manure management is minimal to nil. With lower costs, you get a higher rate of income as a result, making that low-cost operation economically viable.

Mining and cattle ranching helped prepare western territories for statehood because these were two industries that brought people to the west. The people who moved west wanted to join the United States because they wanted to see law enforcement intervention.
Low rainfall and poor soil conditions are not good for farming. This area will support cattle if not over grazed.
