Good question.

The South always had the same war-goal, and it was very emotive - to defend the homeland against the invader.

The North initially fought for the integrity of the Union (which had a lot to do with the cotton revenues) - but when the civilians realised the war was lasting longer than expected, this did not seem to justify the continued bloodletting.

The war-aim was then changed to the abolition of slavery, which helped to restore morale, and also, tactically, made it impossible for Britain and France to help the Confederates without looking pro-slavery.
