WRONG ANSWER BELOW **********the reason why North America is named after him is that the map makers believed his book where he wrote he found north America, so they named it after him. He lied and this has been proven.

Yes, BOTH Americas bear the Latin feminized version of his name... While primarily known as a cartographer (mapmaker), he DID make several voyages (as an 'observer') to "The New World" that Christopher Columbus had "found".

America was named after Amerigo Vespucci because he was the first to suggest that Christopher Columbus never really did sail to the Indies but discovered a whole new world. A German geographer suggested that since he was the first to realize it, America should be named after him.
