Britain was widely acknowledged as the leading world power from about 1815-1914. (However, its power within Europe was less).

The sun never set on the British Empire. It covered so much territory that it was always daytime someplace in the Empire. They had Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, British Virgin Islands, much of the Middle East and many other areas in their control.
