Answeryes (at least that's what my Italian friends and teacher tell me )Yes he was born in Italy, he was born on October of 1451 in Genoa, Italy.
He was actually born in the Most Serene Republic of Genoa, so although he may have spoken their language, his nationality would be described as Genoan/
Christopher Columbus was an explorer. But what kind of explorer? Italian or Spanish? Christopher was a Spanish explorer with a multiple number of ships called: "Santa Maria", "Pinta", and "Nina". They are Spanish names. But talking about his race, he is Italian. He moved to Spain. The Spanish queen of that day was the only one to support his voyages financially. That is the reason he is unknown as an Italian.
Italian but he worked for the king and queen of Spain on his trip to the new world
Most Historians and Scholars agree that Columbus was Genoese. However, there are many other theories out there, ranging from the possible to the outrageously bizarre. Here are just a few,
Luis Ulloa, a historian from Peru, claims in a book that Columbus came from the Catalan speaking area of Europe.
Seraphim G. Canoutas, a Greek scholar, claims that Columbus was Greek.
The linguist Estelle Irizarry, claims that Columbus was a Spanish Jew.
Simon Wiesenthal postulated that Columbus was a Sephardi (Spanish Jew).
Patrocínio Ribeiro claimed in a book that Columbus was Portuguese.
Manuel da Silva Rosa, an information technology analyst and amateur historian, claimed in a book that Columbus was Polish.
Norwegian Tor Borch Sannes has speculated that Columbus was Norwegian.
And my favourite,
Alfonso Ensenat de Villalonga claimed that Christopher Columbus was "the son of shopkeepers not weavers and he was baptised Pedro not Christopher" and "his family name was Scotto, and was not Italian but of Scottish origin".
