Christopher Columbus was not trying to find the Garden of Eden. He was trying to find a way to the Spice Islands, by sailing westwards around the globe. The Arabs had blocked the trade route through Egypt and the Middle East. Had Columbus succeeded and been able to load his ships with valuable spices, he would have been rich beyond his wildest dreams.
