At first, King Henry VIII was Catholic. However, when he met Anne Boleyn and wanted to marry her, she told him that she wouldn't until he divorced his current wife, Catherine of Aragon. He went to the Catholic Church and asked the Pope to annul his marriage to Catherine, but the Pope refused. So Henry broke from the Catholic Church and made Protestantism the official religion of England so that he could marry Anne.
