Union General Joseph Hooker graduated from West Point in 1837. He ranked 29th in his graduating class of 50 cadets. Hooker became a well known general and reached his peak when Lincoln appointed him to command the Army of the Potomac. Sadly for him, he lost the key Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. He was replaced as the commander of the Army of the Potomac by General George Meade.
Union General Joseph Hooker had replaced General Burnside as commander of the Army of the Potomac. His first operation in early April of 1863 was to take the offensive against General Lee. Hooker intended to outflank Lee, reach the rear of Lee's army and force Lee to take the tactical offensive to save his army from disaster. Lee had always preferred taking the tactical defensive, especially when he was outnumbered. He dis this at the Battle of Antietam in 1862.

Even though Union General Joseph Hooker had an enormous two to one advantage of General Lee's army, not every Union general held a favorable view of Hooker's ability to lead the Army of the Potomac. In a letter to President Lincoln, General Sherman expressed these words: " I know Hooker well and tremble to think of his handling of 100,000 men in the presence of Lee. I fear the result of an advance by Hooker on Lee". Sherman proved to be correct and Lee's greatest victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville was close at hand.
