George was a Naval Aviator. He has two stories of cotroversy surrounding his name. In one instance, he was on a bombing training flight, when he 'lost' his engine. Instead of 'pickling' his ordnance (bombs), he ditched the aircraft, with the bombs still attached. That shortened his glide distance & time aloft. The suggestion being panic. Later, he was reportedly shot down in the Pacific, bailing out. The submarine "Finback" picked him up. Allegedly, his only official account was made by the Captain of the Finback, who wrote that Bush said his crew bailed out over the island of Chichijima - OR - after he was 'hit.' He didn't know where his crew was? that's nuts. Why would any aircraft commander bail out, not knowing where his crew was. No reason was given as to why they would have had an excuse to bail out over Chichijima.
He surely was. He flew 58 missions as a US Navy torpedo bomber pilot flying off an aircraft carrier during World War II. He was shot down once and the rest of his crew was killed. He was rescued by a submarine. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
