It depends on your perspective. In WW2, Germany had tried to destroy Russia, killing anyone they encountered. They locked up innocent Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and political dissidents and executed them in the millions. They bombed England to near destruction, all in an effort to eliminate everyone who wasn't part of their Aryan ideal. Some believe being "fair" would mean that we would have destroyed a few million of THEIR people. Allowing them to live was lenient. Dividing their land to be controlled by the Allied nations was considered necessary to keep Germany from rebuilding after the war, and starting another war, 20 years later. That's what they did, by the way. They tried to take over Europe during WW1. The league of nations placed sanctions on Germany, (which they never enforced), and Germany started marching across Europe again in the 30's. What could have been more "fair" than to prevent them from doing it again? The Allies were good to Germany, they brought supplies, medical help and didn't kill them.
