Best Answer

Yes, he was. He was the Carthaginian general who attacked Italy from the north, crossing the Alps. It was a surprise attack as the Romans had never expected an attack from that direction. Hannibal led a 30,000 army, won several battles against the Roman army on his way to Rome, but he could not take Rome itself. In the end he was recalled to Africa and was defeated by Scipio at Zama in 202.

No he did not. He invaded Italy and routed the Romans and their Italian allies four times. However, the Romans improved their strategy and had a larger reserve of soldiers. Moreover, his brother Asdrubal, who was bringing reinforcements and siege machines for Spain, was intercepted and routed. Hannibal spent the last three years of his campaign suck in the toe of Italy (Calabria) until he was recalled.

Yes and no. Hannibal had victories over the Romans in Italy. When the Romans changed their battle tactics, he had difficulty competing. After chasing him back to Africa, the Romans, under Scipio, defeated him in the battle of Zama.
