Yes. Italy decalred war on the US on December 11, 1941. This was later on the same day that Germany had declared war on the US. Three days earlier the US had declared war on Japan, after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7. The US fought some Italians in North Africa in the first half of 1943, and then the US and Britain invaded Sicily (an island which is a part of Italy) in July, 1943. The fighting on Sicily lasted about five and one-half weeks. Both Italian and German troops were on Sicily. In September, 1943, just as US troops were about to hit the beach and land on mainland Italy, near Naples, Italy surrendered. This was September 8. But the Germans had suspected Italy might try to get out of the war, and Italy was full of German soldiers, who made full use of the rugged Italian terrain to continue fighting the Allies for the rest of the war. Rome was captured by the Americans on June 4, 1944, two days before the D-Day landings in Normandy in France, so it was front-page news back in the states for only a day. After that, the US troops in Italy were getting killed just as dead, but up to the capture of Rome they were part of America's main effort in the fight in Europe, and after Rome and the Normandy D-Day, they were part of America's main effort to capture Bologna. By the end of the war the Alies had fought their way into northern Italy, but had not cleared the entire country of Germans when the surrender came.
