McCain flew a US Navy A-4 Skyhawk jet fighter bomber on bombing missions over North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk was a small jet, nicknamed the "scooter". The US Navy liked it because it was inexpensive to build and purchase, and was alot smaller than the F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantoms, which took more space atop the aircraft carrier's flight decks.
