In the biblical times, "40 years" was their way of saying, "for a long time" . . . the actual amount of time is lost to antiquity until the New Testament. In the New Testament, they still used the term, "40" to mean a bunch of whatever, the Roman governors kept very accurate records. From what we have of these records, we can tell pretty closely accurate dates, times, and amounts.

According to The Bible, David was king for exactly forty years. According to the same source, so was his son and successor, Solomon. Since the number 40 appears so frequently in the Bible, this suggests that what we read in the Bible about King David is based on on legend and speculation.

There may be little doubt that David existed, if only as a local warlord over a small domain based around Jerusalem, but we can not be sure how long he ruled, or how large and united his domain was.
