Yes - they were both descendants of King Henry VII of England.

Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII, son of Henry VII.

Henry VII's daughter, Margaret Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, married King James IV of Scotland.

The son of James IV and Margaret Tudor became King James V of Scotland.

James V was succeeded by his daughter, Mary I of Scotland (often called Mary Queen of Scots) and she was the mother of James VI of Scotland.

When James VI became King of England he held the separate titles "King James I of England" and "King James VI of Scotland."
