Maryland was a border state. It was a slave state that did not succeed from the union during the civil war mainly because Lincoln had the army take Annapolis before the state legislature could vote on succession.

The famed Mason-Dixon line was known as the slave/free north/south border. This is the line that separates Pennsylvania from Maryland.

Yes. Slavery was prohibited in the Northwest Territory by the Northwest Ordinance of 1789. This act of Congress covered all the territories that would eventually become Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota.
