Yes, it was. What is now Palawan and the Malaysian province of Sabah was once connected, in the same manner as Alaska and Russia were once connected by Beringia. But this phsyical land-bridge between Palwan (Philippines) and Sabah (Borneo) date back all the way to the ice age and prehistoric times. By the time that Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim civilization settled in Borneo and Philippines, both groups of islands were already were already seperate islands. Because the rising waters basically destroyed what land bridge between Philippines and Borneo.
