Calling him a "Star" may be a bit extreme, but he had first or second billing in several movies. His best performance was probably the part of the famous Notre Dame football coach in 'Knute Rockne, All-American'. In his most well-known movie, 'Bedtime for Bonzo,' he is upstaged by a chimpanzee.

Reagan was in "Knute Rockne, All American" but he didn't play Knute Rockne. He played George Gipp, one of Rockne's players, which is how he got his appellation "The Gipper."
George Gipp was a very versatile member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In his senior season, Gipp led his team to victory against Northwestern University then gave punting lessons after the game. He contracted strep throat. Two weeks after being named Notre Dame's first All-American, he died. On his deathbed, he told Knute Rockne if the team was getting beat in a game some day, the coach should tell them to "win just one for the Gipper."
Ronald Reagan appeared in over 50 movies. Probably the most famous was Knute Rockne - All American, and the most remembered (that he would have rather been forgotten) was Bedtime for Bonzo. King's Row was nominated for best picture.
