Sir Joseph Banks was a Lincolnshire landowner, a botanist and a scientist. He sailed on Captain Cook's first voyage when they landed in New South Wales (then called New Holland). He was influential in persuading the British Government to set up a Penal Colony in NSW, he corresponded with the early Governors of New South Wales and is well known in both Australia & New Zealand as the Father of Australasia.
