The first atomic bomb was detonated at the White Sands Proving ground at a location called Alamagordo in New Mexico in a project know as the Trinity Operation. A few weeks later an aerial atomic bomb exploded above Hiroshima, Japan. Another bomb, an H-bomb, exloded above Nagasaki, Japan 3 days later. At that point, Japan agreed to unconditional surrender, thus saving millions of lives that would have been lost had the Allies had to invade Japan (which was going to start about 2 weeks later).
