He was Catholic. Catholics are Christians but the religion is quite a bit different with emphasis on sacrements and saints more so than other Christian religions. Sometimes it’s confused if they are Christian, as Catholics believe it is important to be known as such rather than another sect of Christianity.

Take it from a Presbyterian, Roman Catholics are definitely Christian. For example, Catholics have no problem in agreeing to all articles in the Apostle's Creed.
