He was respected by Lincoln - which was the main thing.

He was also the victim of much feuding - with his boss, General Halleck, and also with his subordinate, John McClernand. These two were always dredging up his earlier reputation for drunkenness on duty in the old army, for which he was supposedly discharged. But there is no record of him being drunk on duty as a General.

Grant was not respected as a noble leader in the style of Lee. (Among other things, he dressed like a tramp.) Even his undoubted bravery was not very spectacular; he was just calm and unflappable under fire.

He principally acquired respect for winning battles, and eventually the war.
