Vladimir Lenin (birth name Vladimir Ulyanov) was associated with both Russia and the Soviet Union.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Lenin became an influential leader and philosopher among Communists in Russia. After a pair of revolutions overthrew the Russian Tsar (emperor) in 1917, Lenin's Bolshevik faction took control of Russia. A civil war also erupted, and after the Bolsheviks won the war in 1922, the Soviet Union was created. Lenin basically ruled the country as a merciless dictator until his death in 1924; after his death, there was a power struggle which was won by Joseph Stalin, who is known for being one of the world's worst dictators.
