Neville Chamberlain was both right and wrong to appease Hitler. He was right to keep Hitler from getting hyper angry and coming after England if he did not get the Sudetenland. He was wrong because if he had stood his ground to hold up the terms of the Versailles Treaty he would have maintained the integrity of the Treaty and his own integrity. It really did not matter what anyone did. Hitler was going to do whatever he wanted so really it is a moot point.

He was right to see Hilter as if he didn't then hilter would have continued of invading places and then eventually be the most powerful man in the world. What he did was right, if he didn't do that then there would be a war over the Treaty of Versialles was too unfair, but then as he did do right he was unlucky that they were not happy anyway. So it was a no win no loss situation.

After WW1 the people of Britain ad Europe were terrified of the possibility of another major war so it is understandable that they would do just about any thing to avoid another war. However in hindsight this was a mistake as denying the reality of the plans Hitler obviously had caused them to be badly prepared for further warfare.

Why did England appease Hitler?

"You seriously need to check your history. England (Britain in fact, not just England) NEVER gave in to Hitler." Actually, I think the problem here is the way the person worded the question. It is indeed correct to say England did not "give in" (as in surrender), but many people felt that Neville Chamberlain, whose policy as prime minister was to appease Hitler, gave in to him. Chamberlain truly believed that he could bargain with Hitler and that Hitler would compromise. Hitler, of course, had NO intention to compromise, and when Chamberlain came back home to England claiming he had basically prevented a war, and that there would be "peace in our time," he found out all too soon that Hitler had no intention of compromising, nor did he want peace. Chamberlain's serious mistake was trying to appease Hitler, and as I said, many people saw that as "giving in" to him.

Who was the british PM who attempted policy of appeasement with Hitler?

Neville Chamberlain .Neville Chamberlain, although it should be stated that he didn't WANT to appease Hitler, he was just desperate to avoid another apocalyptic European war.He remembered the holocaust of World War 1, and did not want to see Britain dragged into such a conflict again. He thus tried to contain Hitler's activities as best he could by getting him to sign the Munich Agreement of 1938, in which Hitler pledged not to invade any further nations after having annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia (most Austrians were Nazi's themselves in any case, and WELCOMED Hitler's invasion). But Hitler broke his promise, and invaded Poland at the begining of September 1939, forcing Chamberlain to declare war on Germany on 3rd September.
