Sumter was a US Army garrison on a tiny island in Charleston harbour.

The South were trying to assert their sovereignty ove it, as part of South Carolina, and therefore of the Confederacy.

The North were trying to hold it, as US property, and affirm their non-recognition of the Confederacy.
