Abraham had only one wife, but it was customary for the wife to offer her servant as a concubine since she could not conceive. It was also customary for Solomon to have several wives as a king. There are several cases of polygamy in the Old Testament and it was culturally acceptable. The only reason that God chastised Abraham for sleeping with Hagar to have a child is not because sleeping with her was wrong, but because it showed that Abraham was not trusting God to give him a son with his wife Sarah as God promised. Even though Hagar and her son were eventually banished, they were still blessed by God because of the cultural acceptability of what happened. The child between Hagar and Abraham gave birth to the Islamic faith.

We are told of two wives of Abraham. His first wife was Sarah of whom was born Isaac and is in the line of Jesus. Abraham's second wife was Keturah who bore him six sons. I Chronicles 1:32 tells us that Keturah was a concubine, a wife lower in status than Sarah.
