In places, like china for example, it wasn't really hard at all. Most people lived in palaces and if they didn't, they were still well off. It was very clean there and very luxurious.
However, in London the middle ages were hard for most people with all the black death and plague (it wasn't very clean in London back then), in fact, 7165 people died in one week because of the plague.
