There was fleeing to unoccupied France, maybe US or other areas but I doubt after 1939. Leaving France in 1940-44 was very difficult. A few people managed to flee through Spain to Portugal and then on to the U.S. This was very tricky as Spain, though neutral, was friendly to the Axis.
