Right or Wrong depends on your political point of view. There is no one correct answer. If you were a friend of Ho Chi Min you would most likely believe that the US was wrong to intervene in Vietnam. If you were a friend of John Foster Dulles, you would likely believe that the US was right to intervene.
It was only wrong for the potential draftees, familiy, and friends of draftees; otherwise (if no one was ever conscripted for the war) no one would've really cared. It would've just been another war going on somewhere on earth, nothing new, nothing earth shattering.
But when the son of a politician (or white collar parents) gets drafted! That's going to cause some trouble. And it did...draft riots.
