The Star of David, which is actually called 'The Shield of David' is a "modern" civic symbol of the Jewish Nation, it is not mentioned in the Torah.
The king was expected to lead his people in living according to the Torah. Kings such as David, Solomon, Yehoshafat, Hizhiah and Yoshia did just that.
We worship only God. Jews hold King David in reverence, similar to the way that Catholics hold the Pope in reverence or the way that Muslims hold Mohammed in reverence, but they do not elevate him to the level of worship.
