have done some research and at first i gave Sir EJ and songwriters a little more credit and thought they were referring to Idi Amin who took power in 71 (year song was released) and was most certianly a madman not to mention several other issues that could have a brit singing a less that patronizing song about him. as a side note mr amin is worth checking out, as this guy made Hitler look like tony robbins. anyway. considering my impression of lyrics and events of the time i have to agree with those who say it was deservedly or not, Nixon. the United states has always been referred to as "across the pond" or water if you will, by the british. also found out that EJ was not keen on the whitehouse trying to bring Britain into southeast Asia. and a personal note that EJ being a European bisexual was/is most certianly more liberal, and most likely not to fond of Mr. Nixon and his more conservative views. also lyric "is the window black or is it shaded" seems to elude to the war clouding the civil rights problems of the day....although i feel confident this is correct i must state this is just my humble but well researched opinion.

No, "Madman Across the Water" is a song by Elton John and Bernie Taupin and does not specifically mention or reference President Nixon. The song's lyrics depict a mysterious and enigmatic figure, but they are not directly tied to any political figure.
