For women - of any social class - premarital sex was very risky before the availability of modern contraceptives, especially the contraceptive pill. In some societies, working-class families didn't regard it as beyond the pale subject to the very important proviso that the couple married before the first baby was born. For middle-class girls premarital sex was a complete 'no-no' at the time. Some middle-class families had unmarried pregnant daughters sent to mental hospitals indefinitely and the medical profession was most co-operative!
