On the home front in the US, anything associated with Vietnam was "hush, hush." Advertising caused fist fights, vandalism (punctured car tires, eggs thrown onto front porches, dead animals left in front lawns, spray painted words and symbols on doors, etc.). Discussing Vietnam AT WORK was often frowned upon, as it caused a disruption in the "work place." So hanging something on your front door (of your home or car) was ASKING FOR IT!

That's not universally true. I haven't heard of people hanging things on their doors, but some people wore black armbands in protest. Toward the end of the war, POW and MIA bracelets engraved with the name of a missing soldier were a popular form of remembrance.
